Christmas isn’t Cancelled!

At the start of the pandemic I read this blog post by Jamie Tworkowski on the TWLOHA website – this paragraph stuck in my head

“Conversations will not be cancelled.
Relationships will not be cancelled.
Love will not be cancelled.
Songs will not be cancelled.
Reading will not be cancelled.
Self-care will not be cancelled.
Hope will not be cancelled.

May we lean into the good stuff that remains.”

As the year went on and weddings, trips home, jobs, friends’ visits, holidays and gatherings got cancelled and hope was starting to be lost I held onto these words and tried to find ways to hunt the joy in this season. And it got me thinking about Christmas.

Christmas isn’t cancelled. Perhaps the parties are, the carol singing, the journeys to visit family and friends but Christmas isn’t.

It’s going to look different this year that’s for sure but what can we do to celebrate this special time of year in a safe and responsible way? You may be in a similar position to me this year and unable to buy gifts (if you are please hear me when I say there is no shame in that – your loved ones will understand) so what can I do instead to still make an effort and connect with the people in my life?

Enter my Christmas isn’t cancelled email series! I’ve been thinking about this for months but wasn’t sure I would actually get round to doing it (and was secretly hoping the pandemic would magically disappear…!) 5 little things in each email to offer up some ideas for connection – a conversation starter, movie to watch, item to make, good deed for the day, small business to shop with… you get the idea! Won’t you join me?

Because after all ‘tis the season to be jolly fa-la-la, la la la, la la laaaaa!

If you have any festive ideas you want added to my list send them my way hello@susannahgarfit.com

Also I may not be able to afford lots of gifts this year but I have tried to be intentional the last 6 months about putting aside 10% of anything I make for giving/tithing – it may seem counter intuitive to give when you are in debt but I read somewhere that if you don’t give when you’re poor you won’t give when you’re rich and that stuck in my head as a probable truth!

I plan on donating a small amount to all the charities I highlight in the series so if there are any you would like me to include please let me know! (I also do need to give it away before I pull it back into my account and spend it on me… have definitely done that before!!)

Let’s spread the good news this festive season of love, joy, peace & hope.

Merry Christmas!
